STIHL Bar and Chain Advisor

The STIHL bar and chain advisor matches a guide bar or saw chain to your chainsaw, pole pruner, or garden pruner.

A new digital tool from STIHL is ready for anyone who needs a guide bar, a saw chain, or both. The STIHL Bar and Chain Advisor finds compatible cutting attachment parts for STIHL chainsaws, pole pruners, and garden pruners. It makes product selection simpler. It cuts down incorrect purchases, and it supports safer operation.

Pitch, bar length, groove width, and the number of drive links all have to agree. A chain that looks close enough can still be the wrong part. The advisor steps through those figures before you buy, so the part you order is the one that fits that tool.

Ongmac Lismore uses the same advisor at the counter. A finished result means a quicker recommendation, fewer questions about whether a bar or chain will fit, and more confidence that the part leaving the shop is the right one for that machine.

What it can match

The first question is “What are you looking for?” The choices are Saw chain, Guide Bar, or Saw Chain and Guide Bar.

It then asks what chainsaw or pruner you have. The model name is on the orange nameplate on the side of the tool. The form’s own examples are MS 172, MSA 70, and GTA 26. The list includes STIHL chainsaws, HTA pole pruners, and garden pruners such as the GTA 26 and the GTA 40.

STIHL guide bars and saw chains can also suit a chainsaw from another manufacturer. The advisor tells you to check that saw’s user manual before you treat a result as a fit. When it asks for the make, Husqvarna is the example it shows.

How the questions work

Enter the model name if the nameplate is readable. The advisor then limits the bars and chains to the ones STIHL lists for that tool.

If the nameplate is worn, enter the measurements. It asks which chain pitch you need, what length of guide bar you need, and what the groove width of the guide bar is. Groove width is the drive link thickness. It also asks how many drive links the chain has. The form’s own examples are a 35 cm (12″) bar and 50 drive links. Where a length only exists with one groove width, that width is already selected.

You can photograph the laser field on the guide bar. The advisor uses that photo so it can identify the bar and show matching saw chains.

Later questions are optional. You can say you are cutting clean wood, dirty wood, or carving wood. You can ask for a carving guide bar, or for a lighter bar if you work with the tool for a long time, or if you work in tree care.

A safety notice sits before the results. You tick “I have read the safety notice.” The notice says to follow the instruction manual for your tool, because that manual lists the approved combinations of saw chains and guide bars. The button after the notice is “View Results”.

Bring the result to Ongmac

Run the advisor, note the bar and chain it returns, and bring that to Ongmac.

Call 02 6621 5981 if you would rather talk it through. Have the model name from the orange nameplate, or the pitch, length, groove width, and drive-link count.
